Looks like it’s maximum security and little group activity for the POWs in the illegal Guantanamo prison. According to the Houston Chronicle says about 75% will be held in max. This is supposed to quell unrest such as hunger strikes, suicide attempts and riots. Three men were being force-fed last week, according to the International Herald Tribune. The hunger strikes were handled by strapping the striker to a gurney to allow a feeding tube to be inserted. Most human rights advocates regard that as a violation, and a physician’s participation in it as an ethical breach. The exercise yard was divided into a set of one-man pens. Can’t walk around much in a one-man pen.
Meanwhile, 16 citizens of Saudi Arabia have been released to the Saudi government. Maybe that’s progress, or maybe they’re in for torture at home. And I can’t help remembering that the majority of the 9/11/2001 participants were Saudis.
In case you think the Bushies don’t violate human rights, think about former Army Captain James Yee, who was held for 76 days in a Navy brig. All charged against him were dropped, and he received a commendation for his service in Guantanamo as the Army’s first Muslim chaplain, and an honorable discharge. In his book and in interviews he has described the violation of his religious rights during his detention. His captors wouldn’t tell him either the time of day or which way east was. Without that, he could not pray properly as an observant Muslim. When he was arrested there was no notification of any of his family -- he was ‘disappeared’ Pinochet-style by the military.
Yee also says that children as young as 12 to 14 were being held in the prison. Of course those kids are quite a bit older now that they’ve been in there for 4 to 5 years.
Media in the U.S. either ignore Guantanamo or persist in calling the POWs in Guantanamo “terrorists”. Tell the truth -- most of them were sold to the US by acquaintances in Pakistan and Afghanistan without any evidence. Need some money? Sell a someone to the US.
But if you were a devout muslim in Gitmo and they abused your Koran and you, you might go on a hunger strike too. Does that make you a terrorist?
